Mount Mercy University now offers new specialty license plates, available through the Iowa Department of Transportation. Mount Mercy alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of the University can showcase their pride in Iowa’s newest university with Mustangs blue and gold license plates. The plates are available through each Iowa county treasurer’s office.

Mount Mercy University announced today that enrollment numbers for its graduate and accelerated student populations continue to rise. Total graduate students for Fall 2010 is 202, up from 168 in Fall 2009. Mount Mercy’s adult accelerated student population totals 368 students, up from 366 in last Fall 2009.

Mount Mercy College has been named one of the Best Midwest Colleges in the 2011 edition of America’s Best Colleges by U.S. News Media Group. Mount Mercy is ranked 24th this year. The exclusive rankings, which include more than 1,400 schools nationwide, will be published in the September issue of the U.S. News & World Report magazine, on newsstands starting August 24.Mount Mercy is one of seven Iowa institutions to be ranked in the Midwest Regional Colleges category.

Mount Mercy has been recognized in the Center for Student Opportunity’s 2011 College Access & Opportunity Guide, a comprehensive college guidebook designed to help low-income, first-generation college-bound students make their college dreams a reality. Mount Mercy is highlighted as an institution making strides in outreach efforts, financial aid opportunities and student support services in an effort to attract and retain students who might otherwise miss a higher education opportunity.

Mount Mercy’s 2009 President’s Report magazine was recently given the Award of Distinction at the 2010 International Academy of the Visual Arts Communicator Awards design competition. The Communicator Awards is one of the largest design competitions in the world, and this year drew over 7,000 entries from across the country. The Mount Mercy Magazine is designed by Benson & Hepker Design in Iowa City.

Associate Professor of Art and Department Chair of Communications, Literature and Arts Kathryn Hagy has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant by the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to teach at the Fine Arts College of Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Mount Mercy’s Assistant Professor of History Adam Ebert was recently awarded the Gilbert C. Fite Award for the best dissertation in agricultural history from the Agricultural History Society. Ebert’s dissertation, “Hive Society: The Popularization of Science and Beekeeping in the British Isles, 1609-1913,” is believed to be the first dissertation from a student writing on a non-U.S. history topic that has won this award.

This year’s theme was “Becoming a Global Citizen in Mercy.” The conference was held at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. Atkins’ presentation detailed Mount Mercy’s endeavors to become more environmentally sustainable.

Mount Mercy College’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team won its thirteenth consecutive SIFE Regional Championship April 8 in Chicago. The Mount Mercy team advances to the SIFE National Competition to be held May 11-12 in Minneapolis. At this year’s Regional Competition, the Mount Mercy team beat squads from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, The University of Toledo, Ohio, and Wilbur Wright College in Chicago.

Mount Mercy College announced today that enrollment for the Spring 2010 semester has increased 5.6% percent since Spring 2009. Total enrollment for Spring 2010 is 1,671 students. The new enrollment numbers include Mount Mercy’s four distinct student populations of traditional, transfer, adult and graduate students. The enrollment for Spring 2009 was 1,582.

Mount Mercy College has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.More than 1,000 Mount Mercy students participated in forms of community service last year, which included service projects both inside and outside their academic learning, which accumulated to more than 12,000 hours of service work.

Mount Mercy College Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Dr. Chad N. Loes has been named the 2010-2012 Dr. Thomas R. Feld Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence.

The Mount Mercy Times, a student-run publication, won eight awards at the annual Iowa College Media Association Better Newspaper Contest awards ceremony held on February 4 during the ICMA and concurrent Iowa Newspaper Association annual conventions. This represents the most awards ever won during the ICMA competition by The Mount Mercy Times, including two first-place recognitions for editorial leadership and best sports story.

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Mount Mercy students set out to volunteer with local agencies dedicated to bettering the community through service and volunteerism. In all, more than 40 students volunteered their time and energy to serve in a variety of capacities, from mucking and gutting flood-effected houses with the Block by Block program, to painting and remodeling for Aid to Women.

Mount Mercy’s Dance Team received a Division 1 rating, the highest rating a team can earn, during the Iowa State Dance Competition in Des Moines, Iowa on December 4. This will be the third year in a row the team has earned a Division 1 rating.

Mount Mercy’s Assistant Professor of Business Tracy Tunwall has been elected as the 2010 President of the Iowa Senior Human Resource Association, which includes more than 30 members statewide. She will begin her new role January 1, 2010. Candidates considered for membership must possess more than 10 years of work experience in human resources, made contributions toward progress of the field, and posses a strong dedication to volunteerism.

Mount Mercy Dean of the Institute Tom Castle has been appointed treasurer for the Commission for Accelerated Programs (CAP). Castle was voted in during the national conference on November 17, and will serve as treasurer for one year. He previously served as a member-at-large.
